The Future of Green MICE, Seen from Singapore

Hello, this is Chris & Partners. The new year 2022 has dawned 🌞 Are you greeting the new year well? Issues still valid even in the new year would be COVID-19 and the environment. In the MICE industry, too, the environment is a field that keeps drawing great interest. Today, let's explore sustainable MICE (green MICE)why it's drawing attention and how eco-friendly elements are being applied to MICE.

Why is sustainable MICE drawing attention?

Sustainable development is development that pursues sustainability in harmony with economic growth, social stability and integration, and environmental conservation. To realize it, three things must be met—economic growth, social justice, environmental protection—and applying these three to the MICE industry is precisely sustainable MICE. In recent years, global environmental awareness has surged, gaining worldwide interest in various sustainable-development and green-MICE projects. Accordingly, an atmosphere favoring eco-friendly/sustainable MICE has spread in the MICE industry and begun drawing attention. Green MICE (sustainable MICE)—you can see marketing cases using it too; entering the 2020s, as belief in value consumption and ethical consumption strengthened among consumers, especially the MZ generation, MICE hosting is also affected by this phenomenon. When hosting MICE events, banners, placards, and paper use are minimized and eco-friendly exhibition booths are preferred. Sustainable MICE-event operation and eco-friendly construction and operation of exhibition convention centers and hotels are also being touted, and many organizers do indeed tend to select host venues with these aspects in mind.

How Singapore, a MICE leader, practices green MICE

Singapore is well known as a frontrunner leading the MICE industry, right? The Singapore Exhibition and Convention Bureau (SECB), through MICE 3R Toolkit, provided the following specific guidelines for the green-MICE industry:

3R Toolkit for the MICE Industry

📍Donate - Donate goods in good condition for repurposing. For example, donate banners to local charities or schools to be made into bags, etc. 📍Carpet - Don't use carpet. - If carpet is needed, use carpet made of recyclable material and reuse it at future events where possible. 📍Paper - To reduce paper use, use mobile event tech such as mobile applications. - Encourage exhibitors to distribute content via online platforms. - When printing is necessary, use *FSC-certified paper. *What is FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification? A system in which a third-party body evaluates, by principles and standards considering environmental, social, and economic impact, under the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) established to realize sustainable forest management. 📍Disposables - Use reusable tableware instead of disposable. 📍Food - At the venue, review installing on-site food-waste dischargers to process food waste and reduce disposal costs. 📍Recycling Bins - Place trash bins together with recycling bins and put recycling bins at every booth. - Recycling bins should be properly labeled and placed where visitor traffic is high. 📍WOOD for customised booths - Separate and recycle scrap wood. 📍E-waste - Use rechargeable products rather than disposable batteries, and LEDs rather than fluorescent lights, to reduce e-waste. 📍Green meeting packages - Organizers or venues that offer eco-friendly meeting packages with options to reduce waste, such as minimal table setup and water. 📍Engagement - Provide exhibitor kits on how to reduce booth waste. - Specify waste-minimization guidelines in exhibitor terms, including the use of reusable booths. Beyond these there are various guidelines. You can see that Singapore continually works at sustainable event planning and has devised clear methods and guidelines. The Singapore Exhibition and Convention Bureau (SECB) responds quickly to global issues like green growth and eco-friendly policy, using eco-friendly, sustainable MICE as a marketing point for Singapore MICE. 👉Want to know why Singapore became a MICE leader?
