2021 Environment Day: The Year of Ecosystem Restoration

Hello, this is Chris & Partners. 😊 Do you happen to know what day this past June 5 was? It was Environment Day! 🎉🌳🌻🌊🏔 Environment Day is a day established at the ‘UN Conference on the Human Environment,’ held in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1972, where the international community pledged joint efforts to preserve the global environment. As environment-related issues such as zero waste and ESG come to the fore across society lately, it seems we need to think again about the precious environment and make efforts to protect it! In that sense, today's post will introduce events and campaigns held by various companies and organizations to mark Environment Day. 🤓

2021, the Year of Ecosystem Restoration

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) selects an Environment Day theme each year, and this year, 2021, ‘Reimagine, Recreate, Restore’ under the slogan, ‘Ecosystem Restoration’ was selected as the theme, it's said. As factories and population movement halted due to COVID-19, the clean, natural state of the world recovering its original form also became a topic. It was tantamount to proof that the agent destroying nature was humans. That, due to climate change every year, glaciers melt and sea levels rise, and that many animals are endangered by poaching and the like, is also a sad reality everyone knows. Now that we can no longer turn away from the destruction of the ecosystem, it's time to watch and act on ecosystem restoration with alertness and interest. 🤕 So, on 2021 World Environment Day held under the theme of ‘Ecosystem Restoration,’ just what events and campaigns did our country's companies and organizations hold?

Examples of Environment Day events and campaigns

First, Coca-Cola. Coca-Cola joined the ‘2021 Clean Up the Earth Campaign,’ which carries out environmental protection through ocean and city-center cleanup activities. Following last year, this year too it joined with the sponsorship of the Coca-Cola global foundation, supporting domestic nonprofit organizations working on waste-cleanup activities and building social consensus on the need to protect oceans and wetlands, it's said. Lotte Chilsung Beverage ran a label-free product Brand Day event on the ‘Naver Brand Store.’ During the event period it issued coupons so people could reasonably buy label-free beverage products, and will donate 2% of product sales to an environmental organization. Oriental Brewery held a ‘Cass Spent-Grain Upcycling Food Festival’ for its employees. Spent grain is a byproduct that arises in the beer-brewing process and is high in protein, fiber, minerals, and the like, with high value as food; this ‘spent-grain upcycling’ was planned to make known that it is an eco-friendly business that reduces the carbon footprint. By using a byproduct that naturally arises in the beer-brewing process, you can suppress the carbon emissions that occur when landfilled. Black Yak, together with the Ministry of Environment, ran an eco-friendly campaign, ‘Give PET, Get New Clothes.’ This campaign, exchanging 15 label-removed PET bottles for PET-recycled T-shirts from ‘Black Yak’ and ‘Nau,’ was run to draw out consumers' voluntary participation in PET-bottle separate disposal. The five organizations E-mart, P&G, POSCO, the Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation, and TerraCycle joined forces to run a plastic-recovery campaign and decided to pool their efforts on long-term environmental improvement. Through the ‘Bring Plastic, Protect Our Seas’ special program, they collect waste plastic—toothbrushes, shampoo bottles, food containers, and the like—and the collected waste plastic will be upcycled, combined with steel materials, into products usefully usable in daily life.

Plogging examples

Plogging is an activity of picking up trash while jogging🏃🏻‍♂️—it started in Sweden in 2016 and spread rapidly, centered on Northern Europe. There are companies that ran such plogging to mark Environment Day: SK Innovation runs a volunteer activity in which all members take part, ‘Sanhaejinmi (Mountains, Seas, Truly Beautiful),’ a plogging activity, it's said. SK Innovation's president and SK Global Chemical's president stepped out as the first participants on the 4th, plogging in the Gwanghwamun and Myeong-dong areas of Jongno-gu, Seoul, respectively. Lexus Korea also provides plogging kits to customers and runs a campaign—until June 15—giving eco-bags by drawing to customers who post verification photos on social media. Pulmuone prepared an environmental-cleanup activity to widely spread awareness of the seriousness of marine waste and emphasize individual practice, the ‘Clean Up Campaign.’ It also ran the ‘Blue Sea Clean Up Campaign’ at Songdo Beach in Busan, picking up trash at Songdo Beach and educating people on how to dispose of it correctly. We looked together at examples of events and campaigns held to mark 2021 Environment Day. 🌻 Before it's too late, how about practicing small efforts for the environment together? 😉
