2022 tech trends

1) The metaverse craze and competition set to accelerate

The Washington Post named, as the first of this year's tech trends, ‘big tech's competition toward the metaverse.’ Forbes also set ‘entering the metaverse’ as a major consumer-tech trend this year. That said, not a few voices question how substantial that virtual world will be. Tech outlets like TechRepublic predicted ‘a proper metaverse won't arrive in 2022.’ But just looking at this year's conference content, the metaverse is clearly still a hot keyword.

2) Launch of AR/VR-based mixed-reality devices

Apple, Meta (formerly Facebook), and other major tech companies are expected to launch AR (augmented reality)- and VR (virtual reality)-based mixed-reality devices optimized for the metaverse within the year. Mixed-reality devices already failed to go mainstream due to issues like heavy weight and dizziness from long wear, but depending on the new devices' usability, they could be a catalyst for metaverse expansion or remain the preserve of some enthusiasts. The new products are expected to incorporate technology that reads facial expressions and eye movements to precisely match the real you with your virtual-world avatar's movements.

3) Expansion of the EV market

The US's CNBC forecast that this year EVs will make up 10% of the entire auto market. On January 3, Germany's Mercedes-Benz unveiled an EV capable of 1,000 km on a single charge, breaking the ‘range wall’ that was the biggest obstacle to EV purchase. The Washington Post said ‘this year EVs will shift from cutting-edge to an ordinary issue,’ meaning EVs will be considered an important option even by ordinary people, not just early adopters. It's also of interest how EV-startup latecomers—including the US's Rivian, which succeeded splendidly in its IPO last year but hasn't yet produced vehicles in earnest—will appear this year.

4) Hybrid work environment

As jobs are reshaped in COVID's wake—doing multiple jobs instead of one, and working by moving between reality and the metaverse instead of a company— ‘hybrid work’ is expected to become common. The tech market keeping pace is also growing. Beyond the accelerating shift to cloud (virtual storage) and collaboration-program-based work environments that let you work anywhere with an internet connection, related new tech is being developed one after another—converting call content to text, summoning participants in other spaces as holograms, and more. Last year, the tech industry enjoyed an unprecedented boom despite the COVID-19 economic crisis. Big-tech stocks soared and many companies achieved record results. It would be good to keep a careful eye on this year's tech trends and major-conference movements that experts have picked, to see which technologies and companies will surprise the world this year. 😉
