At last, a peace international conference opens in Seoul.

Alongside corporate efforts to raise peace awareness, the Seoul Metropolitan Government is hosting, on the coming Monday–Tuesday, November 8–9, an international peace conference joined by peace and security research institutes from various countries.🎉 Today we'll look together at SPIC 2021what kind of event this is. ​

What is SPIC 2021?

SPIC 2021(Seoul Peace Initiative Conference) under the theme ‘Cities and the World: A Path to Peace and Coexistence,’ brings together the international peace and security experts taking part in SPIC to address problems of discrimination and conflict in Seoul and across the world. It is a peace international conference creating a forum for public discourse to achieve coexistence and peace on the Korean Peninsula, in Northeast Asia, and further in the world. SPIC 2021 is hosted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government / The Seoul Institute. To build everyday peace for its citizens and contribute to peace on the Korean Peninsula and in the world, Seoul proposed the ‘Seoul Peace Initiative.’ The Seoul Peace Initiative is a concept to raise the autonomy of Seoul, a city government that builds peace, and to promote the revitalization of Seoul-centered peace discourse. As the UN Development Programme has emphasized local governments' local governance for peacebuilding, Seoul seeks to complement national-led peacebuilding policies and to establish peace policies and institutions through which each individual can enjoy a safe and peaceful life in daily life.

When/where is it held?

SPIC 2021 runs over two days, Monday–Tuesday, November 8–9, 2021, and is an ‘online event’ held via live YouTube streaming. The time starts from Day1 : 18:30, Day2 : 19:00. This event is free, and every session is provided with simultaneous Korean/English interpretation. (You can watch on the official website and YouTube channel.)

📍Day1 (11/8) after the opening ceremony, Sessions 1 and 2 run on the theme of the achievements and tasks of cooperative research by peace and security think tanks, and the future of Northeast Asia and Seoul, and 📍Day2 (11/9) Sessions 3 and 4 are scheduled on the geopolitical approach to peace and security, and the megacity Seoul and everyday peace and coexistence. With 13 global peace research institutes that have conducted ongoing research on ‘peace,’ and more than 30 speakers from home and abroad taking part to open various forums for discussion and form the sessions, it's worth looking forward to a flood of knowledge and trends on peace, right?😁

SPIC 2021 cooperative-research think tanks

SPIC is composed of think tanks and research institutes representing peace and security research in North America, Europe, and Asia, with a total of 13 institutions from 9 countries—including The Seoul Institute—taking part as partners. For the SPIC partnership, the Seoul Peace Dialogue was successfully held in November 2020 as a preliminary meeting, and in 2021 a research agreement was concluded to form the SPIC consortium and the first joint research was conducted. Based on this, this coming November, peace research institutes and experts from around the world will gather via online video conference to hold ‘SPIC 2021’.
